Company Profile:
Professional Staff (Alphabetical)
Gerald (Gerry) Crawmer, Weld
Engineer, Graduate of The Ohio State
University with Bachelors and
Masters degrees in Welding
Engineering. His 42 years of work
experience have included most fusion
welding processes, in both low-alloy
and stainless steels, as well as
metal preparation, heat-treatment,
and manufacturing systems. Much of
his work experience was with General
Electric Company in various
engineering and management positions
associated with metal joining for
heavy equipment used in the utility
industries. This background enables
him to help clients solve weld
related problems during manufacture
or in service, provide direction and
interpretation of weldment materials
data, and assist in weld and welder
qualification.
Gerry is a life member of the
American Welding Society, where he
has contributed in a number of
activities and positions including
Section Chairman, Chapter Editor of
the Welding Handbook, Sub-Committee
Chairman, and District Director.

Asa Kaplan,
Metallurgical Engineer, is a
graduate of Brooklyn Polytechnic
Institute (Bachelors) and Rensselaer
Polytechnic Institute (Masters) with
degrees in Metallurgical
Engineering. His 41 years of work
experience with General Electric
Company covered material acceptance
and development for wheel and rotor
forgings for steam and gas turbines,
rotors for large generators, soft
magnetic materials and extensive
investigations of solidification
defects (chemical segregation and
shrink porosity in large forgings)
including computer simulation of the
solidification of large ingots. He
has also conducted numerous failure
analyses of wheel and rotor forgings
for steam and gas turbines, rotors
and retaining rings for large
generators; steam and gas turbines
buckets, blades, vanes and castings,
large generator magnetic stator
cores; bolts, etc. Following
retirement, he has continued as a
metallurgical consultant involved
with failure analyses of many
different components in steam and
gas turbines, and large generators.
Asa is a life
member of the American Society for
Metals (ASM) and The Metals Society
(TMS).

Roland O’Brien-Bills, PE; Founder &
President
Founded AIS Accident Inspection
Specialists in October 1998. The
company became successful in the
earlier period through boiler
Inspections, infrared inspections,
training, and risk engineering. He
is credited with developing the
Equalized Risk Assessment and the
'Equalizer' software for use on
equipment, boilers, pressure
vessels, machinery, turbines,
generators, and electrical power
equipment.
An
industry veteran with nearly
27-years of expertise in accident
investigation experience, and
16-years as a risk professional. His
vision for engineering, inspections,
accident investigations, risk
engineering, and training places the
client first in assisting them with
practical cost-effective solutions.
He
is a Professional Engineer, earned
his MS in Safety Engineering. Holds
BS in Mechanical Engineering, and an
AS in Math Science.

Dr. Joseph Palko, Materials Engineer
He has over
20-years experience in materials and
ceramics, evaluating materials for
commercial applications, starting as
a research assistant and teaching
assistant at Rutgers University
Department of Ceramics, where he
worked on developing of refractory
abrasives and composites.
In a variety
of commercial industries, he has
been involved in problem solving by
applied research, especially new
product and process development.
This includes materials protection
in extreme environments, developing
of refractory ceramics and ceramic
to metal systems such as igniters,
refractory coatings, and high
intensity lighting systems. In
addition, he has performed failure
analysis in these systems.
As a program
manager, he has supervised
mechanical and thermal testing of
materials, some of which were
innovations for the turbine
industry, and has extensive
experience in analytical techniques,
such as microscopy and
metallography.
He has taught
courses in ceramic and glass to
metal bonding, and has taken
additional course work in glass
chemistry, especially in relation to
mechanical properties.
He also edited
the text “Physics for Ceramists” by
Professor Harold T. Smyth.
Dr Palko has a Ph. D. in Materials
Engineering from Rutgers University,
and a BS in Mechanical Engineering.
He is a member of the American
Ceramic Society, and the American
Society of Mechanical Engineers.
